Barneys Unveils Lady Gaga's Holiday-Themed Workshop

Barneys opened the doors to Lady Gaga's Workshop today at its New York flagship store. Shoppers were able to peruse an array of Gaga-themed treats, music, accessories and apparel, curated by the pop star. The space is Lady Gaga's interpretation of Santa's workshop and was designed by stylist/Thierry Mugler creative chief Nicola Formichetti, and artists Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide Pierson of international collective Assume Vivid Astro Focus. The workshop will be open until January 2.

Joseph Altuzarra: 2011 Winner of CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund

Last night the 8th CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards dinner at Skylight in New York awarded French-born, New York-based designer Joseph Altuzurra as this year’s winner.

Altuzurra who was nominated last year for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear received $300,000 towards growing his brand alongside invaluable mentoring from key industry leaders. The $100,000 prize was awarded to New York-based designer Pamela Love and newcomers from Chicago, Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind. An exclusive committee that included Proenza Schouler designer Lazaro Hernandez, Theory President Andrew Rosen and Vogue Editor Anna Wintour, decided the winners.

The finalist list was a tightly kept secret until last Thursday, when the CFDA and Vogue announced the lucky contenders. The ten finalists included a wide array of emerging designers and also semi-established brands, some of which were nominated in prior years. Names like A.A’s Antonio Azzuolo, Soraya Silchenstedt of Finn Jewelry, Dana Lorenz of Fenton/Fallon, Alexa Adams and Flora Gill of Ohne Titel, and Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty of Suno were a few included.

A Very Model Thanksgiving

The "Thanksgiving" print by artist and illustrator, Danny Roberts is definitely dinner-time conversation.

The 13x9 print available on Robert's Etsy shop features Karl Lagerfeld playing host to models including Lily Cole, Mona Johannesson, and Tanya Dziahileva. Industry insiders, designers and press alike are speculating on whom the fourth model is but Robert's has yet to disclose the likeness.

No stranger to fashion himself, Robert's studied photography at Cal Pol SLO and later Fashion Design at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He has collaborated with Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Lovers, Forever21, Heutchy Shoes, Lancome and Sundance Channel's Full Front Fashion but drawing remains his passion.

Tokidoki Barbie: Toy or no toy?

Last month US toymaker Mattel collaborated with LA-based Tokidoki to launch an interesting collector’s edition Barbie doll. With an initial price of $50 the doll is now being sold on eBay for a whopping $500.

Contrary to the classic blonde-hair Barbie style, the Tokidoki doll looks more as a character from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, with a pale-pink bob, tattoos on her back, shoulders and neck and a green pet named Bastardino.

Students from around the world came to attend the 6th Annual Teen Vogue Fashion University event this past weekend, filling the two-tiered auditorium at the Hudson Theatre to maximum capacity. An inspiring opening address was given by Michael Kors that kicked off the event with similar presentations throughout the day from notable designers such as Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Peter Som and Jason Wu.

Students were also given the opportunity to take classes at the Condé Nast building ranging from "The Visual Gatekeeper" with Linda Fargo to "Building A Billion-Dollar Business" with Jessica Simpson. The event ended with a Q&A with the Teen Vogue editors, led by the Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley (highlight: a surprising rap about all the editors at Teen Vogue from a very enthusiastic student in the audience). Both the energy and excitement of the day full of classes with industry experts seemed to have flooded outside of the auditorium even after the event was over, proving a well rounded education is never out of fashion.

We're midway through the collections as Style Fashion Week which has featured collections by including Gypsy 05, Nicolita and Stop Staring! to name a few.

Alternative Apparel's "Oasis of Color" SS12 collection has a raw, earthy aesthetic inspired by California's Palm desert. The rich textures work well against Moroccan inspired prints, bold color choices (the Thulian pink is stellar), and rinsed washes. The collection is casual, wearable and made with the utmost detail to construction. Design Director Lissa Zwahlen is, "juxtaposing neutral, weathered shades with soft, warm tones and pops of color to signify spring's resurgence of life and new beginnings."

Warren Tricomi salon continues to do hair at the shows and styles have ranged from 1950s pin-up inspired to flirty beach waves. The stylists have maintained a key balance of variety in styles with creating signature looks for each designer.

Another highlight? Bijou Tresor's jewelry. The yellow and tanzanite crystal cuff is the perfect addition to any spring accessories wardrobe while the Gold Elephant Ring fits perfectly with the Coastal Nomad trends for juniors.

Mikey Koffman: The Impresario of Los Angeles Fashion Week

Mikey Koffman is a woman whose distinct style is synonymous with her career path. While many may recognize the name from Showtime’s hit series, “The Real L Word,” the tattooed Angeleno first gained recognition a little over ten years ago, when she opened Sin Cycle and became the first woman to own a custom motorcycle shop in Long Beach. As her business began to grow, so did her career aspirations.

Koffman has produced a number of ad campaigns and runway shows, which ultimately led her to aid in the establishment of Los Angeles Fashion Week, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. In 2005 she opened The Gallery Los Angeles, a full service marketing and event planning company in downtown Los Angeles, with the intention “to help deliver a message to the world through fashion.” Subsequently, in 2008, after seven years at Smashbox Studios, Mercedes Benz concluded their final season of Los Angeles Fashion Week, at which point Koffman spearheaded a new initiative to establish Los Angeles Fashion Weekend at Gower Studios in Hollywood.

You're working with quite an impressive and varied list of designers, how

do you select who presents at LA Fashion Weekend at Sunset Gower Studios?

We scoured LA for the best and brightest designers to promote on a larger

platform. Many designers would love an opportunity to showcase at our event,

but we can only choose a certain number. I based my selection on the caliber

of craftsmanship, aesthetics of the collection and would the collection fit

with our production.

What is your planning period from booking the designers to actually

having the collections hit the runway?

It varies with each designer; some have been months and others in weeks. But

everyone must be present.

Despite all the glitz and glam, producing a fashion weekend is hard work

- what do you find is the most challenging aspect?

The most challenging part of it all is to meet MY own expectations. I always

want to make the show bigger and better than the last. But when you're

coming from such a successful event - it's often hard to top yourself.

What designers currently inspire you?

My sense of style is quite unpredictable and eclectic and I love designers

that embody those traits. I personally like Vivienne Westwood, Alexander

McQueen and Thierry Mugler. They always go outside the box and their designs

are unparalleled.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about LA Fashion Week?

The biggest misconception of LA Fashion Week is that our event showcases

nothing but bikinis and flips flops. LA has large number of amazing

designers who need to be recognized. LAFW serves as a platform for these

talents to catapult their collections further into a larger fashion

marketplace and hopefully their designs make an imprint.

What are three things that you can't live without during the shows?

A walkie-talkie, a great assistant, and redbull.

What was the most challenging show you have ever produced?

Each show is different and as I previously stated it's a priority to make

each show better than the last. This upcoming show is certainly a great

challenge. But we have more hands on deck and all collectively working on

one goal which is to make an amazing and unforgettable show.

What was the most inspiring show you've ever produced?

The first one was the most inspiring because it motivated me to create even

more and that's what I'm doing now.

What is more annoying: seat poachers or people that show up with 4 plus

ones?

Both, seating charts are created for a reason, and let's not act hungry when

we RSVP.

What is your fashion week soundtrack?

I have a diverse taste in music and it's ever changing - I'll let you know

come the weekend!

Love Letter to Brooklyn

While strolling through Brooklyn we discovered a wonderful example of street art and architectural intervention, and after doing a little research we uncovered that it was actually Macy’s attempt to transform their old parking garage. The brand commissioned Philadelphia artist and sign painter Stephen Powers to intervene and modify the aesthetics of the old building. The final piece called Love Letter to Brooklyn is a well edited piece of art with lines such as I was nurtured here, Life is a fight for life, Euphoria is you for me and I see eternity, among many more. The project is a reflection of the community's thoughts and feelings that arose from the meet and greets between the artist and locals during its creation.

Style Fashion Week in Los Angeles

Style Fashion Week’s second season in Los Angeles is proving to be quite successful. Produced and directed by the Bubble Fish Media team, the opening night featured Nicolita, Karena’s and La La Land. In between shows, guests were spotted ogling the fire burst Aston Martin from Galpin, sipping Sapporo and getting mini-makeovers from the Napoleon Perdis team.

Nicolita’s SS12 swimwear collection was a diverse mix of modern silhouettes and vintage inspired pieces. The nautical collection is the strongest in overall design direction and one could easily see it on the shores of Miami or a rooftop pool in Manhattan.

Kareena’s Trends SS12 outwear collection is a vibrant mixture of cultures and colors. Moroccan, South American and tribal influences are evident in intricate beadwork and silhouettes. The dip-dye skills are showcased through strong color palettes of yellows, blues and rich reds. WGSN loves the ombre tunics and feel they are key SS12 swimwear staples.

La La Land closed the night with animalia tops and skirts including antelope sweaters, flamingo cardigans and a sheer horse shirt. The tops are lightweight and functional for SS12 but more bottom pieces would have helped balance the collection.

The rest of the week looks promising with collections by Stop Staring!, Alternative Apparel, Gypsy 05 and the highly anticipated Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion event this upcoming Saturday.

Faena Arts Center, Argentina

The recently opened Faena Arts Center in Buenos Aires situated in a building that used to be a mill is currently exhibiting a startling work of art by the renowned Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto.

Featuring an interactive installation the artist guides the spectators through what can only be described as a huge hanging crochet web on which spectators can walk looking down to the ground while feeling and smelling the artwork. Ernesto is known for including the observer in the creative process creating thus a physical interaction between observer and art.

The last day of Mercedes Benz DFashion Mexico delivered a handful of on-trend designers but it was Mexican design duo (Giovanni Estrada and Jose Alfredo Silva) TRISTA that caught our eye. The IES Moda graduates presented an earthy and organic collection that explored soft structure, relaxed draping and intriguing fabric and color techniques. Our favorite was the cream empire dress that was stained with tea leaves to create a muddled effect around the hem.

Mexico Fashion Week: Day Three

While day three at Mexico Fashion Week delivered plenty of on-trend collections, the standout was Gianfranco Reni. Many pieces in his line resembled the work of Alexander McQueen and I'm guessing that has something to do with the fact that he interned under him for a while.

The collection entitled 'Womanimal' captured the essence of raw beauty taking inspiration from all types of creatures. The closing piece had the audience cheering and applauding as the hi-lo hem gown covered in white feathers finished off the majestic collection.

Now in its twelfth year and beginning September 30, The New Yorker will be hosting its well anticipated three-day festival. Discussions with writers, book signings, conversations about art, panels, movie streamings, and walks are just some of the exciting events that will take place throughout the city.

With so many events, we'd definitely recommend the following two: The first is the special panel “Bluth Family Reunion” with cast members Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter and creator, Mitchell Hurwitz of the successful TV show Arrested Development. The second is the guided tour by world acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, as he leads the audience around his first skyscraper at 8 Spruce Street.

Mercedes-Benz DFashion Mexico kicked off in Mexico City yesterday showcasing graduates from three universities and four other runway collections. Our highlight was Jorge Duque with standout pieces including his bold primary blue cape, hyper-acid prints pants and cut-out silk dress in ivory and coral.

We stopped in to take a look at the new Vans DQM General Store at 93 Grand Street in Soho. The store has a pared back feel with exposed brick walls, high ceilings and a wood and steel staircase. There is a carefully edited selection of photographs and custom made furniture which enhances what is a very contemporary meets vintage approach to the interior.

Vans DQM General Store is a collaboration between California based Vans and New York based skate shop and skate brand DQM. It’s a really interesting meeting of minds from the East and West Coast skate fraternities which has led to a refreshingly different store space. The shop carries exclusive co-branded DQM for Vans product, which extends the collaboration in a truly meaningful way for a skate centric New York customer, as well as an edited selection of separate DQM and Vans premium product for men, women and kids. At WGSN we are keen on meaningful collaboration, the fruit of which should elevate or bring new synergies and possibilities to how we approach and perceive each party from both a customer and business perspective. The Vans DQM General Store does just that. It is definitely worth a look.

QR codes: Function over Fun

QR codes were at the centre of a heated debate around whether social is a proven sales driver at shop.org, the e-commerce gurus' forum in Boston last week. They have their detractors, Bill Bass from Charming Shoppes, and their evangelists, Michael McCormick of Columbia Sportswear Co, to name but two.

On retail safari in Manhattan today we stumbled across two that resonated with the WGSN retail team not just because they had direct sales potential but because they were customer service orientated and above all USEFUL, a word not considered often enough by marketing teams when they set criteria for QR creation.

The first from Barnes & Noble is a code which lets students download and trial a textbook study aid. The second is from a realtor and provides a listing of all its weekend property viewings at the tap of the phone.

There is a lot of food for thought here for the unconvinced, for those that think their customer will never be “hot “ for QR codes. Who doesn’t want better service and life to be made a little easier? It’s about getting the recipe right for your customer.

I've currently been inspired by the mysticism of animal totem signs after a friend turned me on to a book called "Animal-Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small," by Ted Andrews. There are shoe lovers and there are shoe connoisseurs, George Esquivel falls into both categories.

Having spent over 17 years designing and making shoes in a small manufacturing facility in Orange County, California, Esquivel became a 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, and is now a CFDA member.

His collection is always created by hand, one at a time without mass production, which ensures that every shoe is one-of-a-kind and made with the utmost care. The footwear aesthetic blends traditional, bespoke shoes with edgy silhouettes and brilliant pops of color. “I’m inspired when clean lines, rugged textures and unexpected colors come together to form the perfect shoe,” says Esquivel.

WGSN managed to sneak in a short Q&A at the Phaidon book store last night with Garance Doré despite our non-stop FNO itinerary.

So, how are you liking Fashions Night Out this year, and what were you up to this time last year?

A year ago I was exhibiting at Jill Sander's store, I did a series of pictures for them, which is a totally different angle here because Phaidon asked me to select pictures that I love from my work, so it’s very different but I love both!

It must be hard for you to choose your favorite work because you seem very passionate about what you do.

Well I think that the secret is I can say it because I’ve had so many different jobs in my life, but when you like what you do you just won’t stop; you just want to keep on. I just want to do the blog, I want to meet people that I love, I want to take pictures of them and be excited about new stuff.

If you could spend time at any store here in SoHo tonight, what store would you go to?

Well I am very happy with the Phaidon store because it’s so cool. You know, it has the best books!

You were at Phillip Lim earlier, how was that?

Yes I was at Phillip Lim. I was making cocktails. I don’t know, he just told me to come by so I was like yeah, I like him, I like what he does.

So what cocktail did you make?

Garance on the Rocks...Don’t really ask me what is inside because I don’t remember, but it was very good!

What are you looking forward to for Fashion Week this year?

Well it’s funny each fashion week I’m trying to understand, you know because when you start fashion week you’re so excited about everything and after a few years you’re like; you know everybody, and so the important thing is to always take a different angle so you stay excited. I don’t want to do the same thing so I’m trying to work with designers that excite me, or trying to photograph someone differently. I just want to keep my heart you know...beating.

What are the fashion shows that you’re most looking forward to seeing?

I always think the Marc Jacobs one in New York is, how do you say, it's very important. I’m curious about Celine; I’m curious about, I don't know there are so many things. I’m curious to discover a new brand, Creatures of the Wind. There are so many things!

WGSN stopped by Times Square this evening to view the DKNY Men's Spring 2012 collection. Security checks were needed to enter the venue - second floor of the NASDAQ marketplace - which was a perfect spot considering the collections theme: Classic City Cool. While the overall look seemed inspired by both the city and the coast, there was also a classic undertone to it with the design direction being "movie icons who dressed with confidence, ease and style."

Our highlight: the synchronised billboards in Times Square that streamed the show!

In conjunction with Fashion Night Out and the launch of the collaboration between director and photographer Patrick Brian Hoelck and Dirtee Hollywood t-shirts, Ron Robinson and Fred Segal will host an exciting event showcasing the Patrick Brian Hoelck + Dirtee Hollywood line.

Patrick Brian Hoelck, who got his start directing music videos and later discovered a love of shooting stills, will be on site to sign his t-shirts and copies of his latest book Polaroid Hotel, a collection of Polaroid images capturing intimate moments throughout his life and career, spanning 17 years.

Will.i.am and Vogue West Coast Editor Lisa Love will host the opening ceremony at the Los Angeles hub of FNO, The Beverly Center. With three floors of celebrations carrying on into the night, the shopping center is set to be a whirlwind of fashion reverie. Nicole Ritchie will host two fashion shows in the main court while each store offers its own special events—Shoppers at Prada can enjoy complimentary Proseco, snack on fresh ice-cream sandwiches and lemonade at Macy’s, and get modeling tips from stars of America’s Next Top Model All Stars at Express.

"This year, Rodeo Drive is going above and beyond with what will likely be the most famous high-end fashion carnival ever created,” says Rodeo Drive Committee President Jim Jahant about Beverly Hill’s participation in the event. MTV's 28th Music Video Awards, held in downtown LA this Sunday, will have plenty of drama and fashion to talk about for days to come.

Of course, all eyes will be on Lady Gaga who's opening the show with a performance that is expected to trump last year's stellar performance in her meat dress.

A special Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse tribute will be a highlight of Sunday's show, with some of the stage acts alluding to Britney in their performances.

Although MTV VMA producers decided to go with a no-host format this year, they've certainly amped up their performance lineup with a recent announcement of Beyonce taking the stage. Adele, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Pitbull, Ne-Yo and Young The Giant are also slated to perform on Sunday.

The whirlwind convention that is Magic came to a close today, so I finished off the third day at POOLTRADESHOW scouting emerging brands for unique womenswear, footwear and accessory designers. My pick of the day had to be Filles à papa designed by two Belgian sisters with edgy street style and provocative apparel. I love their contrast cardigan with over-exaggerated and embellished panelling.

I headed to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center for Project yesterday to highlight the best brands presenting their Spring/Summer collection. The tradeshow was set up to mimic areas of New York with rows named after streets in the East Village. From the overwhelming amount of exhibitors, we have to say, our three favorite items were Primary New York's blouse with sheer shoulder panelling, Katty Xiomara's mesh overlay skirt and Kolae's striped palazzo pants.

Tomorrow is the grand opening of Treasure & Bond in Soho. Though owned by Nordstrom, Treasure & Bond is a new, independently operated boutique that plans to donate 100% of its profits to non-profit organizations benefitting children of New York City.

To keep costs down, the 11,137 square foot store has a no frills aesthetic, and incorporates reclaimed and recycled fixtures from Nordstrom. The brand mix tells a story, with merchandise laid out in a bazaar, flea market style.

Over 150 brands are represented, including jewelry from Akong London, limited edition bags from A.toy, Bliss Lau’s hybrid apparel-jewelry-accessory pieces, custom couture hats from Satya Twena and authentic vintage glasses from The Vintage Frame Company. Check it out over the weekend and do good by shopping!

BOFFO Building Fashion

September is always an exciting, albeit chaotic, time with fashion week and all the surrounding festivities, but we're especially excited for BOFFO's first installation for 2011 featuring Nicola Formichetti and Gage/Clemenceau Architects. The collaboration will showcase Formichetti's work within a temporary retail environment - and their first free standing pop-up space - giving both the designer and architects the opportunity to wow New Yorkers.

Long Beach Free Store

This past weekend the Long Beach Free Store opened to an impressively large crowd.

The retail strategy is simple; everything in the entire store is free. Simply “share what you have and find what you need,” by bringing any item to “donate” and take any item, despite the trade-in value.

While some shoppers brought in used CDs, artwork and homewares, the majority of merchandise is apparel. Products include everything from vintage sundresses and purses to designer shoes and accessories. One shopper picked up a pair of authentic Prada heels and left Ben Sherman ties in their stead.

Keep in mind that shoppers that don’t enjoy the hunt need not frequent the store. Although organized and (somewhat) neatly displayed, the racks can be somewhat overwhelming and finding sizes is definitely a challenge. At the end of the day, it’s a refreshing way to upcycle clothes and maybe, just maybe, find a fashion gem.

Missoni for Target

Debuting in stores on September 13th, Target's collaboration with Missoni has the fashion world buzzing. The retailer just released a teaser lookbook of the 400 piece collection on its dedicated tumblr, All The Way Up Here, which is run by an anonymous blogger named Marina.

The collection, which ranges in price from $7.99 to $199.99, makes its official debut during New York Fashion Week, but until then, I like what I'm seeing. For apparel, the simple crewneck sweaters and shift dresses seem most wearable, but for interiors, I'd love to snag this colorful beach cruiser!

WGSN Loves...Wellen

While previewing the Spring/Summer 2012 collections at Agenda Trade Show in Huntington Beach, I came across an exciting emerging brand, Wellen. Based in San Clemente, California the contemporary men's brand offers a selection of clean, timeless surf-inspired looks ranging from pale pink oxford shirts with wooden button detailing to slightly quirky boardshorts.

What I loved most from the collection is the brand's hand-drawn tees by San Diego artist Sky Walker. It's easy to see the joy and tranquility in these lighthearted pieces and feel transported to a happy place.

Athleta rolls-out retail stores

With a growing presence in the athletic apparel sector, Athleta is making a giant leap into the New York retail scene. After its recent launch on the Upper West Side on Columbus Avenue, the brand is expecting to open an additional 49 stores along the east coast by 2013.

The new stores will offer Athleta’s collection of women’s active lifestyle apparel for yoga, swim, running, gym, hiking and skiing - all designed by female athletes. We're expecting Athleta's on-trend merchandise and wallet-friendly prices to give NYC's favorite yoga store, LuluLemon, some strong competition in the market.

Karl Lagerfeld for Macy's Impulse

On August 31st, Macy’s will launch a capsule collection specially designed by Karl Lagerfeld (the long reigning creative director of Chanel, artist, photographer, rabid iPod collector and Diet Coke aficionado) for their contemporary department, Impulse.

The 45 piece collection mixes the allure of the gamine with the recklessness of the rock ‘n roll groupie and blends downtown attitude with uptown grace. With elements of faux leather, classic tweed, lightweight knits and gauzy chiffons, it includes a broad range of work-appropriate dresses, flirty dresses, sexed-up leather leggings and suiting separates.

Lagerfeld nods to Chanel in his starched, high collars and colour palette choice of black, white and greys with a few punctuations of pink tones. A master of tongue-in-cheek self-promotion, his larger than life persona is prominent on knit tees and tanks.

The price points are poised for a junior contemporary market and range from $50 - $170. The collection will be available in 235 select Macy’s stores across the U.S. and online at Macys.com. After selling out his H&M collaboration in 2004 in a matter of days, Macy’s + Karl will surely equal mass hysteria.

Every time someone from the WGSN team visits Brazil, I always take them to Vila Madalena to check out the local graffiti and street art. Recently, I included a new stop, the Galeria Logo, a space that just opened in the neighborhood of Pinheiros.

Logo features work by important players in the new Brazilian street art movement, such as Bruno 9li, Sesper and Alex Hornest.

The gallery premieres with Perturbo Collective and the branded project MCD Fake Sunset, inspired by the iconic California sunset, a perfect example of one of our macrotrends for the 2012 summer, Cinematic.

WGSN+Parson’s Trend Forecasting Winner: Aria Choung

Every semester, WGSN and Parson’s The New School for Design hold a Trend Forecasting Contest, which challenges Parson’s students to create an inspirational trend analysis to compete for an internship at WGSN. This semester’s winner, Aria Choung, is a Fashion Marketing student. Her submission, titled Under Construction, wowed WGSN’s judges with New York City-inspired colours and gritty graphics.

Where did your inspiration come from? I started with taking street shots, and under the advice of my professor, we sorted out what I had come up with. Color became my focus, mainly colors in New York City. I was looking at every kind of color you can think of in the city, like construction cones and putting it together on my blog. I saw a connection with my photos and street shots and that’s where my inspiration took off.

How do you see this trend disseminating? We already see it existing in the form of color blocking. I think that it will move towards accessories, adding a pop of color into a minimalistic outfit would push the envelope. It’s hard to say where exactly, that’s why I’m here interning, to learn and become more accurate.

Were you really motivated to get the internship? Actually, I just really enjoyed doing the project. I wish I could’ve done more! I’m still amazed that I got it done and even more shocked to have won. New York City really inspired me. Absorbing everything around me is what motivated me on this project.

What are your plans for the future? That’s a question that we all ask ourselves at some point. Trend spotting is definitely something that I’m really passionate about and would love to be a part of in the future. If it’s something I don’t get into as a career, I will always pursue it on my own.

The Creators Project's second edition in São Paulo

Last weekend, Sao Paulo hosted the second edition of The Creators Project, a three day even part of a global partnership between Intel and Vice that promotes the creative use of technology.

Set at the Bienal, one of the city's architectural landmarks, the event featured works by artists like Muti Randolph (BR) and United Visual Artists (UK), most of whom showed interactive large scale installations. One of the most popular pieces was the collaboration between legendary music photographer Mick Rock, director Barney Clay and David Bowie in Life on Mars Revisited, a re-edited version of Bowie's classic video from 1972, shot by Rock.

Performances by Zegon, Tom Vek and indie band Chairlift were accompanied by a large video projected over Bienal's windows. The highlight of the program was headliner Emicida, the most acclaimed young rapper in Brazil's urban scene, who recently launched his new album which was recorded in New York.

Its worth keeping an eye on The Creators Project website for the 100+ creators video profiles, and details of upcoming parties. The next stop is Seoul, followed by Beijing and New York.

We love... "I Spy" windows at Holt Renfrew

For the upcoming fall season, Holt Renfrew's campaign centers on the idea that "Everybody is a Star." Their latest window displays, titled "I Spy," highlight this theme with an ode to "Film Noir." Femme fatale mannequins are placed alongside a comical detective in classic scenes where heavy spotlighting and deep shadows set the mood.

A predominant trend for spring/summer 2012 is sheer dressing. I attended FUCSIA's runway show, which featured many lightweight, transparent layered looks. The collection was inspired by the pastoral fashion of milk maids, and models were styled with bonnets and carried tin jugs down the runway.

What I liked most is the airy ease of the clothing. With many shows at Colombia Moda, there have been a lot of body-conscious collections, but Caroline Sepulveda's collection looked as if they floated around the body and were as light as air.

Disposable fashion lingerie is on the way!

At Colombia Moda, there is a part of the trade show pavilion dedicated to swim, lingerie and active wear. While walking the show, I spotted a brand that had a very clever concept - make disposable clothing fashionable. The Colombian brand, Be Free has been in business for only less than a year, but their product has gotten great responses from spas and plastic surgery centers.

Rather than creating dull paper underwear that you would never want to wear after one use, this disposable lingerie is something you'd actually want to keep! And you can, because it can be washed and worn up to twenty times.

Bras and panties are trimmed with stretch lace and tiny bows and the construction looked quite sturdy.

Be Free doesn't stop at lingerie. Their next step is to move into the pet market, with dog clothing and blankets so your pet;s hair doesn't shed all over.

This weekend while hanging out in Montauk, I stopped by Cynthia Rowley's adorable new boutique near the Memory Hotel. The 800 square foot store houses Rowley's swimsuits and wetsuits for Roxy, as well as her ready-to-wear collection and accessories. For those shoppers that don't have the budget for some of Rowley's luxurious printed skirts and dresses, the store also stocks an eclectic collection of woven jewelry, gauzy scarves and enamel hairclips.

The boutique also has a pop-up section in the back. On display now is a collection inspired by Julia Chaplin's Gypset Style - think batik caftans, woodblock-printed pillows and colourful, multi-ethnic saris.

We swung by Littlefield in Brooklyn last night to check out the tribute to the now defunct Sassy Magazine. Amongst the mishmah of events - including bands doing covers of Chia Pet, 90s fashion revival how-to's, Dear Boy Q&A's, and a prepubescent talent contest - Tavi Gevinson from the Style Rookie revealed information about her upcoming website Rookie, and her current boy crush. We managed to snap her street style on the way to the event!

WGSN Loves… Bensimon Shoes

WGSN is in the thick of tradeshow season. Last week we checked out PROJECT for some key spring/summer 2012 trends, as well as some of our favorite brands like Brooklyn Circus, Alpha Industries, Creep by Hiroshi Awai, Gregory Allen Company, and Adidas SLVR.

We especially loved the show's curated space, by blogger Marcus Troy and Strauss and Co. Furniture, which was created to forge a stronger relationship between bloggers, exhibitors, and customers. The show also held a "made by" section, which allowed the artisanal quality of exhibitors including In God We Trust and Bowery Lane Bicycles, to be practiced for buyers to witness.

Afro-punk Festival 2011, New York

The summer festivals here on the East Coast keep popping up faster than the flea markets in Williamsburg! The 7th Afro-punk Festival comes to Brooklyn on 27-28 August so be sure to save the date. The free festival boasts headliners such as Santigold, Janelle Monae, Cee-Lo Green, Gym Class Heros, Das Racist and Kenna along with the Nike Battle For the Streets Skate and BMX competition.

If the line-up isn't enough of a pull, perhaps the Afro-Punk Bites and Beats Food Truck setup will get you to the festival as they promise to deliver over 20 of the best food vendors in New York City.

Keep an eye out for WGSN street style photographers at the festival as we continue the hunt for New York's trendsetters.

We Love...Little Lucia

Today was the first round of shows at Colombia Moda. My favorite designer so far was Little Lucia, who showed a delightful collection of bold, yet light'hearted accessories. The designer, Natalia Criado kept a playful approach to her gigantic neck pieces and bauble bracelets by incorporating whimsical plastic figurines, such as faux glaxed donuts, unicorns and hamburgers.

We love the fantasy and whimsy of the designers at Colombia Moda, and Little Lucia expressed this concept with youthful sophistication.

Holly's Apartment monetizes the voyeuristic trend

I love blogs like Into the Gloss, The Coveteur and The Selby for allowing me into the secret world of fashion, art and music tastemakers. Sites like these have been popping up in droves over the last couple years and act as an outlet for our intrinsic voyeuristic tendencies, while inspiring us with design ideas and beautiful imagery.

New blog Holly's Apartment takes this Peeping Tom trend and pushes it to the next level by allowing users to shop directly from her apartment. What Holly calls a "High End Designer Wares Pop-up," the online store features thoughtfully merchandised goods from Bottega Veneta, J.Crew Men's, Ralph Lauren and Barbour. Users simply click the item to get details and add it to their cart.

While some may complain about a lack of selection or the inability to try on or see the condition of merchandise, I love the simplicity and presentation of the collection, and I'm happy to do without the quintessential vintage store smell.

Bloomfest LA

One of the things I love about summer in this city are the music and food-infused outdoor street fairs that bring Angelenos together.

This weekend, the FREE music and arts festival, Bloomfest LA, will be held in the Downtown Arts District. The annual event will feature art, food, shopping and great music from over eight live bands, including indie-rock headliners, Grouplove and psychedelic-soul band, Voxhaul Broadcast.

For those interested in taking a tour of Downtown LA’s street art, Daniel Lahoda of Lahoda Fine Arts will be offering guided hour-long street art tours during the festival.

Among the many local artisan vendors and art booths, there will be plenty of food trucks and a beer garden to satisfy your cravings.

Bloomfest LA takes place on Saturday, July 23 from 2pm to 10pm in LA’s Downtown Arts District.

Famous brazilian plastic shoe brand Melissa just launched a new partnership, this time with Jason Wu. The CFDA Fashion Award winner designed two styles for Melissa, the Ultra and Lady Dragon.

“I am so thrilled to be collaborating with Melissa because it gave me a chance to work with a brand new material, plastic," Wu said. "I find it both an exciting challenge and a great opportunity to be able to present my work on a new platform.”

We Love...Kanye West's new album cover

Kanye West recently broke his near two-month long silence on Twitter by offering the world a look at his ostentatious new album cover for Watch the Throne. The elaborate artwork for this collaborative album between West and Jay-Z, created by former Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, is sending the blogosphere abuzz with comments on the intricately designed metallic artwork.

We love the no-text, image-only bas-relief work alluding to the rapper's regal style. I take this as a sign that bling is going Baroque. Knowing that Kanye fans and fashionistas have emulated his aesthetic cues, I have a feeling this album will lead designers on a trip for all things majestic and grandiose - note, the crown and star crest in all four corners of the album cover.

Although the album titles and music content remain top secret, we have heard that Beyonce and Frank Ocean of Odd Future appear on two tracks of the disc.

The hotly hyped album is due for release on August 2, 2011.
